Is There a Gout Diet?

by Support on February 24, 2011

We recently found this short Q&A which is a good primer on the nutritional aspect of gout control.

What food can I eat to help me get rid of gout?

Gout is not a matter of what you eat to cure it. It’s a matter of what you avoid eating which brings it on. That’s meat, seafood, foods high in fat, and alcohol, beer in particular.

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the formation or purine crystals in the joints, most often the toes. It’s extremely painful (like I need to tell you that). Untreated, it can cause permanent damage. Eating way less purine-containing foods during a gout attack may shorten its duration:
* Organ meats, such as liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, and brains.
* Meats, including bacon, beef, pork, and lamb.
* Game meats.
* Any other meats in large amounts.
* Anchovies, sardines, herring, mackerel, and scallops.
* Gravy.
* Beer.
